During this season of independence, I’m celebrating my full, untethered mental independence. For too long, I have granted (or have had taken from me) space in my mind to the minds of other humans. My mind has been a nation occupied by pillagers – its culture ravaged and ruined by the words, behavior, intentions, and dismissals of its oppressors, both individual and systemic. No longer will I be too much, too little, too loud, too quiet, too thick, too thin, too emotional, not emotional enough, too strong, too weak, too feminine, too masculine, outside social order, outside traditional roles, or with too arrogant a “big” vocabulary. The border has been secured, and only the approved visitors of spirituality, family, friendships rich in positivity, art, nature, and the pure things life will be granted entrance. Let freedom ring.

Touchstone Tuesday: Poem XIX
Perhaps,
the selections
we don’t make
are as
foundational
to our character
as the ones
we do.
(I love that this is entitled Touchstone Tuesday: Poem XIX as though I have any idea what day of the week it is. Hope it’s Tuesday!)
Barabbas
I cannot
help
but to admit
that I am
Barabbas,
released
to an undeserved
freedom
at the Name of Jesus.
Firestone Friday: Poem XXI
A powerful freedom
exists in knowing
that your identity,
your unchanging essence,
and your inextricable value,
do not rest
in production,
so whether you produce
triumphs or failures
or nothing at all,
you remain
as richly radiant
as you always have.
Space for Expression
But what is a relationship
without the freedom
of self-expression?
If you so smother
your partner
that she cannot
be herself,
you have lost your partner,
and she, truly,
should lose hers.
