Different

We all

want

love,

purpose,

good food,

and understanding,

yet we

somehow

manufacture

differences

between us.

Firestone Friday: Poem XXIII

None of us

thinks “I am evil,”

yet

the world

is full

of the stuff.

Firestone Friday: Poem XVII

I think

we reject

our exes

because our

romantic relationships

offer the most

intimate look

at humanity,

and we’d rather

believe exes

are broken

than concede

that it is

the human heart

— individually and collectively —

that is repulsive.

Wordsmith Wednesday: Poem XV

I looked around

the gymnasium,

thinking that, perhaps,

I had nothing

— an entire absence

of thoughts —

in common

with the humans around me.

I determined to find a

thread common

among us.

Finally, I posited to myself,

“well, everyone here

must foster

an identical faith,

a faith that says

the ceiling

of the gymnasium

won’t collapse

onto the floor

tonight.”

Painful Paradox

We’re creatures

so paradoxically made

that we need

pain

dishealth

and heartbreak

to compel us

into self-discipline,

consequences so

grave and horrifying

that we

almost reach out

to good behavior.

Imagine a beast

so depraved

that it cannot

even act

in its own

favor.

Wordsmith Wednesday: Poem X

We all want to be the
person
community
business
country
with the bigger stick.

When are we going
to start building something
with all of these sticks?
